RESEARCHING UNIVERSITIES

I picked this timeline up at Brighton University, I think it will be useful when applying for uni.

I am looking into going to university next year so I researched the photography courses in some universities I have been interested in.

BRIGHTON UNIVERSITY

I like the look of the Brighton Photography course, the location of the university gives a lot of opportunities as it is in the centre of Brighton.

PLYMOUTH UNIVERSITY

I researched Plymouth because I know people that went to uni there and really liked it. I saw on their website that there is a field trip to somewhere in Europe in the first year and an opportunity to study abroad in the second year. This makes me want to look more into this University as travelling is something I really want to do.

KINGSTON UNIVERSITY

I like the idea of going to Kingston as it is close to London. Online the course looks good and that most courses support studying or working abroad. Also you have the opportunity to study a foreign language free of charge. This appeals to me as learning a language is always something i have wanted to do.

From researching online the photography courses at all 3 universities look quite similar. Although Kingston and Plymouth offer study abroad year which is something I want to do. I prefer the location of Brighton as it has the city part but also the sea and beach. Brighton has the highest entry requirement which DDM, Kingston you need  112 Ucas points and Plymouth DMM.
I like the look of all 3 universities so I am going to go to the open days to see what they are like.

UNI OPEN DAYS

Brighton Open Day-

I went to Brighton open day. I booked to attend a photography course talk and then went on an accommodation tour. We also had a look around Brighton to see what it was like there.
I really liked the campus at Brighton University, there were 4 studios, lots of good computer and software, big darkrooms and a big communal area only for photography and film students.
Theres lots of opportunities to have work exhibited and also photography competitions.
The accommodation looks like most universities but I like that you pay to park for a year on the site.
I like the Brighton area as there is a lot going on there, lots of places that would be good for photography.

Scanned from the University handbook:

Kingston Open Day-

At Kingston University we went on a campus and accommodation tour, had a talk about the University, a talk about the photography course, then we had a look around the centre of Kingston. I liked the campus as you could use any of the facilities even if there meant for another course, there was a 3D workshop, filming studio with all video editing software, art rooms as well as 2 big photo studios and darkrooms. The accommodation was in a nice area but the actual flats weren't as nice as Brighton. You could get a free parking permit for a year though. From the photography course talk I definitely prefer it to Brighton, there is also a chance to study abroad for a year along with many field trips. The only thing I was worried about was that they only take on 35 photography students a year. Although this means it will be better as your get to know everyone in the class, it means that it will be harder to get onto the course.

Useful information from university open day programme:

I couldn't attend the Plymouth open day so I sent them an email asking to visit on another day. I never had a reply.

PERSONAL STATEMENT

APPLYING FOR UNIVERSITY

This is the process of applying to university through UCAS. You have fill in your details, uni choices, qualifications, employment and your personal statement.

I had an interview at Plymouth which gave me an opportunity to look around the University and find out more about the course. The course sounds good and I really like where the uni is.
I got a conditional offer from them.

I also had an interview at Kingston,

I decided to withdraw my Brighton choice as I didn't really want to go there. It wasn't worth going all the way there for an interview when I knew I wouldn't end up going there.

PORTFOLIO

For my portfolio I chose 14 images showing a range of different types of photography. I had abandoned, studio, landscape and experimental photos. 6 of these were abandoned photos as I think that there more unique and interesting than others.

STUDENT FINANCE

I looked on Ucas to find out about fees and loans.

Kingston University is the University I would most like to go to so I looked into prices for halls there and how the loan would be.

Because Kingston is in London area I can get a loan of up to £10,700. This is for a student living away from home, which I would be. There are also bursaries available.
The halls I would be staying at with an en suite costs £5,170. That would leave me with over half of the loan for other living costs.

GAP YEAR

Travelling is always something Ive wanted to do. I have thought that having a gap year will be good as I can travel for a year before starting university. I want to visit lots of different and capture photos of different lifestyles, food and people.  USA is the place I would most want to go as their is so many places I want to visit there.
I have looked online at different website offering tours and work abroad.

ICS  is a government programme for 18-25 year olds. It gives people the opportunity to volunteer in places such as Africa. It is funded by the government but you are expected to fundraise £800, this is good as travelling is normally quite expensive. I like the idea of volunteering overseas for 10 weeks as you would get to experience life in another country.

Camp America is a summer job where you work on a summer camp. You pay around £600 and this includes, flights, visas and insurance. After you get a month to travel around USA. This is what appeals to me as Ive always wanted to travel to lots of places in America so this would give me the chance to do that.

Trek America is a tour company for 18-38 year olds. Prices can be quite expensive but it includes flights and you have a set itinerary so you can visit everywhere you expected to. I would like to travel with Trek America because I can travel with a group and not on my own.

STA TRAVEL is a travel company for young people. It offers flights, accommodation and insurance as well as tours, work abroad and volunteering. The company looks good as it offers cheaper prices for young people. There is a lot of capital cities I want to visit to photograph, so booking flights with STA Travel would be good.

JOBS

Although I know I want to go to university before working in photography, I looked at jobs online to see what kind there where and what experience you need

Skills always need to work in photography is good customer service, interest and skill in photography and editing, motivated and confident. I also saw on quite a few jobs you need to be able to drive and own a car to be able to get to different locations.
